TIMES BALI, JAKARTA – It was already 11 o'clock, the weather was rather calm, although I felt a little warm before. I have just come out of the gate of the high school that I had once been there for my life's goal in seeking knowledge.
After saying goodbye to the security guards, one of them told me that there were some alumni preparing to distribute free lunches for the unfortunate people. The good deeds is held once in a week, mostly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. I asked the security guard, where precisely the place.
"There, where the tent is being set up!" answered him. I walked towards the tent near the high school bus stop. There were about ten people sitting with their children, mostly women.
I smiled at one of the old women. It felt like I was still in high school.
I met the alumni friends whom I thought were seniors, but they were mostly my juniors and only one friend from the same graduation year.
An elderly female alumni and her husband were busy preparing the side dishes that kept coming, sent by others who could not help directly but donated funds or ready-made food.
At 12 noon, our guests started to arrive and made queue to take their lunch; they were people who live around the school and online motorbike taxi drivers who passed in front of our school.
Mothers, several grandmothers and children joined the queue orderly and not noisy. They enjoyed their delicious lunch on the mats that have been provided. There were about 100-300 unfortunate people coming along for a free lunch, every time the alumni committee held this social activity.
Sharing good things to others are the main purpose for us. The more people who come to get free lunch, the happier we are.
How lovely to see people eat together, a little hard to just minimize one meal in a day with good heart, at least to give them out of stress spending their money for lunch.
The alumni prepared not only tasty lunch but also high in protein. I tasted the rice with beef rendang sent by one of the alumni. There were fried fish, fried chicken, vegetables and mineral water.
There have been many social activities carried out by the alumni of SMAN 28 Jakarta who are members of IKA 28, one of the alumni is the singer and film star from the 80s era, Chintami Atmanegara. That afternoon the weather was nice and our guests who have finished their lunch feeling grateful, I can see from their faces.
The alumni enjoyed lunch together, took some pictures, and cleaned up the place together.
All were in harmonious. Togetherness is Indonesian people character and to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters amidst increasingly uncertain domestic political news. Happiness is simple, by sharing good things with others, we can feel the happiness. (*)
